This photo was taken in 1918 on the 1050 mm (3 ft 5.3 in) narrow gauge system in Palestine and shows members of a Bavarian air corps sent to the Middle East in the winter of 1917/1918 to assist Turkey. From 1892 to 1922 the Kentwood and Eastern RR was one of two narrow gauge lumber lines that operated out of Kentwood, LA, the last station in Louisiana, south of the Mississippi line on the Illinois Central. The railroad ran east of Kentwood for 31 miles to a place called Hackley, 31 miles from Ken.

Re: Narrow Gauge Caboose facilities. I recall a story told to me by one poster on this forum that peeing off the back of the caboose while holding on to the roof ladder was the preferred method. Total privacy then, not now. I can only guess that other functions probably meant finding a bush or tree when the train stopped.
